- Gay, Marie-Françoise-Sophie
(1776-1852)
writer
Born in paris, Sophie Gay, as she is known, was the daughter of M. Nichault de la Valette, bursar to the count of Provence (later louis XV III), and Francesca Peretti, an Italian woman. Through her second marriage, to M. Gay, receiver-general of the department of the Ruhr, Sophie met many distinguished persons, and her salon was frequented by the leading literati and artists of the period. Her first literary effort, published in the Journal de Paris, was a defense of Mme de staël's novel Delphine, followed by her own novel, Laure d'Estell. Lonie de Mont-breuse (1813) is considered by sainte-beuve to be her best work, but her romance, Anatole (1815), is better known. Mme Gay also wrote several comedies and opera libretti and composed a number of musical works. Her daughter is the writer Delphine Gay, Mme de girardin. Sophie Gay has left a memoir, Souvenir d'une vieille femme (1834).
